Double Crochet Snowman Pattern

As the temperature finally starts to drop, I’m dreaming of snow. Where I’m at, that usually means a light dusting of white that melts before the day is over, yet throws everyone into a panic of buying all the bread and milk that the stores stock. Fun times.

Since my chances for a white Christmas are pretty slim, I have to settle for snow alternatives. This adorable crochet snowman is the perfect festive decoration, and you can leave him out as winter decor beyond just Christmas.

Now, this snowman is a little bit different than traditional amigurumi. Amigurumi typically uses single crochet (US) stitches to create a hole-free fabric. However, I’m not a fan of single crochet because the small stitches make me feel like I’m not making any progress, and sometimes the tight stitches cause hand pain and irritation. But if you use a larger stitch for amigurumi, the project can end up floppy, and stuffing will fall out the gaps.

To avoid those problems but still use a larger stitch, I realized I could stuff my snowman with white plastic bags. Although you can see the bags through the holes in the stitches, they blend in because they are the same color as the yarn. You also don’t need to worry about stuffing falling out through the holes because the bags are too large to easily fall out. The plastic bags fluff up pretty well, so you don’t need very many to create a snowman that will hold its shape.

Sew arms on sides of body between Rounds 13 and 14 of the body.

Round 14-15: Ch 3, 36 dc evenly around, sl st in top of ch 3 from beginning of round (36 dc)

Fasten off.

Make a pom-pom using desired colors; I like the look of a pom pom made from both accent colors and black. Sew pom pom to top of hat

Add a face if desired. I didn’t add one to mine because faces are hard to get right and it looks cute enough without one! 😉

And there you go! Now you have a snowman that won’t melt. Hope you enjoy!
