Double Crochet Snowman – Crochet Amigurumi Hack

This free crochet snowman pattern works up surprisingly quick because it uses US double crochet stitches instead of single crochet stitches. Now, if you’ve done crochet amigurumi before, you might be thinking, “Ummmm Amanda… won’t the stuffing show???” Yes, but i’ve got a secret hack to get around this!

The trick is to stuff your snowman with white plastic bags. Most amigurumi projects are stuffed with yarn scraps or more traditional products like polyester fibers or cotton quilt batting. If you use double crochet stitches and stuff with one of those items, you face two dilemmas.

The first problem is you can see the stuffing through the stitches. Double crochet stitches have larger gaps between them, so if your stuffing doesn’t match your yarn color the mix-matched stuffing is very obviously seen in the project.

The second issue is you can lose stuffing between the gaps. Both yarn scraps and traditional stuffing are made of small fibers that can separate from one another. If they separate too much, those fibers may try to “sneak out” of your project.

With traditional crochet amigurumi, these problems are solved using single crochet stitches. This stitch is tight enough so that stuffing is not visible and can’t escape. But when I decided to crochet a snowman, I was feeling a little… lazy.

For whatever reason, I find single crochet stitches to be SO TEDIOUS!!!! When I double crochet, I feel like I’m making great progress with every stitch. With single crochet, I feel like the kid on a long car trip asking, “Are we there yet?” a million times.

Surely there has to be a way to make a snowman using double crochet stitches???

Yes, yes there is. And that’s what this pattern incorporates. Since my snowman is white and I’m stuffing with white plastic bags, seeing the stuffing between the stitches isn’t a big deal because it all blends together. As far as the bags escaping between the larger gaps in the stitches, plastic bags are one continuous, large item. It would take a lot of effort for a bag to squeeze its way between stitches and escape!

Problems: solved. Amanda: happy.

But let’s be real, you’re probably tired of the long intro and just want to get to the pattern already! Here it is below for free. You are welcome to sell items made from my patterns, but please do not distribute the pattern by any method other than pointing back to my blog, do not claim the pattern as your own, and do not use my pictures. All right, let’s go!

Add a face if desired. I didn’t add one to mine because faces are hard to get right and it looks cute enough without one!

And that is the double crochet snowman! If you need extra help with the hat, don’t forget to check out my triangle stitch video tutorial for additional help.

If you try this project, I’d love to hear how it goes. Happy Crafting!
